Infertility Treatments

Infertility is professed as a problem across the world irrespective of cultures and societies. It has been estimated that 10-15% of couples within the reproductive age bracket are affected by this predicament.

The treatments:

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is a method of assisted reproductive technology in which the washed and concentrated sperm cells are placed in the uterus, when one or more egg is released for fertilization.

IVF (In vitro fertilization) is used to treat infertility or genetic problems that do not allow childbirth. It is a complex series of procedures during which mature eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilized by the partners sperm in a lab. Then the fertilized egg or embryo is implanted in the uterus.

ICSI is a variation of IVF wherein a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. It is generally used when the male is experiencing low sperm count, low quality sperm or high anti-sperm bodies in the semen.

PESA(Per cutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration) and TESA(Testicular Sperm Aspiration) are the techniques used to obtain sperm in cases of male infertility. In PESA, a small needle is placed into the epididymis; in TESA, the sperm is obtained by means of a biopsy of the testicle. The sperm obtained from these procedures are used for injecting into the eggs.

Blastocyst Culture is similar to IVF, but instead of implanting the embryo at the four to eight cell stage, it in cultured to grow into 50-150 cells. At this stage the survival chances of the embryo are higher, as it has survived key growth and division processes.

Laser Assisted Hatching involves making a small opening in the outer shell of the embryo on day 3 of its development. This helps the embryo to break out of its shell and aids the implantation process. It is very helpful for women over 38 years of age.

Semen freezing is used to collect sperm from donors and preserve it for later use. The sperm is thoroughly tested for any traces of disease or abnormality.

Egg Donations are generally collected from young female donors. The eggs are then stored for later use in fertilization.

Surrogacy an arrangement in which a woman of childbearing ability is hired to carry and deliver the child. It involves the implantation of fertilized embryo in the uterus of the surrogate mother. Generally couples that have experienced problems in conceiving and sustaining an embryo opt for this option.

Embryo freezing is used to create and store multiple embryos that are created during IVF. While only one embryo is implanted the others are frozen through vitrification and stored in liquid nitrogen for future use.
