Angioplasty is a technique that mechanically opens narrowed or blocked blood vessels. This technique uses a device called a balloon catheter. The catheter tube is inserted between the blocked portions of the vessel. The balloon is then used to inflate the catheter and hold the vessel open to promote better blood flow. A tube may then be placed to keep the vessel opened while the catheter is removed.
